I pulled out of my driveway and drove the 2.1 miles to the end of my road. At the end of my road I took a right and my driver’s side door opened and then wouldn’t close.

I couldn’t stand to listen to the beeping of the door warning so I pulled over and moved the latch back and forth and moved the door handle until it started working again. Slamming the door repeatedly didn’t help but it made me feel better and so did cursing loudly.

My car has does this once a year since I’ve owned it, but never on the move. Usually I’ll open the door to get in and it won’t latch. Last year I took the whole door apart and soaked all the moving pieces in WD-40 and then oiled them. I don’t get it.

My friend used to have an old Corolla that did that. She’d just have to hold he door closed. Very sketchy. Never could figure out what its deal was.

There’s only one real solution

BUNGEEE CORDS!!!

Sounds like it’s time to take the door panel off and hose down everything inside with a penetrant, then a cleaner, then white lithium grease or something...

My ex’s Taurus did that multiple times. Usually when my brother closed the door. Never did figure out why it happened so often and only ever to the right rear passenger door.

I did that, like a year ago, haha. Is this now routine maintenance?

Buy a Charger? Sounds good to me.

When I was little, my dad had a car that would do that...except passenger door on left hand turns. He was broke so his solution was to tie a bit a rope from the passenger door pull to the right hand side of the steering wheel. Turn left, the rope pulls the door back shut.

Somehow I’m alive to share that.

Haha, that’s pretty scary. I think my dad would have done something similar.

The funny thing is that he is totally comfortable with engine swaps, painting cars, etc. Guess he just could care less about that particular beater. Never quite figured that one out...

My dad was the same way. He built racing engines and custom built his own pull truck, but his daily had holes through the floor and often needed to be persuaded to function correctly.

It might not be if you swap the wd40 for lithium grease. You might need something with more lubrication than what WD40 has. Is it always the driver door only?

I see WD-40 mentioned. If you used that, it’s more solvent than lubricant. You need to add a more permanent lubricant. If it needs to be runny, use pure silicone spray instead of WD-40. If it can be thicker (like door latch parts), use white lithium grease.

Also, New England, so yes it is.

Yeah I used WD-40 as a solvent and used 3 in 1 oil to lube parts up.

The wd-40 was to clean and I used 3 in 1 oil to lube.

Whoops! Maybe there's a different issue?

Hmmm. I think 3 in 1 is too light to last in that environment.

Fair enough. I’ll white lithium the fuck out of it tonight.
